At the end of last year, I decided I was done with New Year's resolutions. Instead, I picked an intention word for the year: someplace for me to set my focus. My word for 2008 was Happy. And I have to say, that worked out fabulously for me.
2008 was indeed happy. Although I have to admit that when I picked the word "happy," I was trying to boss the universe a little. What I really wanted was not to have anything major or catastrophic happen in my life, since in the previous six or seven I'd been hit with one body blow after another: from learning of my husband's sex addiction to having my son face a number of health issues to losing my father-in-law to cancer. I wanted one quiet, peaceful, happy year in which nothing went seriously wrong.
This was actually not that year. Several major health and financial challenges did arise (although I haven't blogged about them for anonymity reasons), but the difference was that I kept my happy wits about me this time and rode it all out. They stayed little blips on the overall happy radar.
So, it's time to pick a new intention word, and this year the word is (drum roll, please)...
GOD
Yep. This year I would like to focus on my spirituality, dedicate more time to meditation, recognize the sacred around me and within me and in those around me. And I figure that with my sights set on my God, I have a good chance of keeping the Happy going this year as well.

I love that approach, especially since my resolutions never last past February.
I think I will choose Eirene (Greek for peace) as my 2009 word.

My word is optimism. I have decided that my brooding over the doom and gloom in the world is helping no-one. It is optimism with action, not blind optimism. I want to change my focus to looking for the solution I know is there and doing whatever I can to work towards it, and believing that with that approach, it will all work out in the end.

This year I'm choosing a few themes to focus on through out the year. My first theme is Sanctuary. It applies both internally and externally. I made a list of wishes for the new year and they kept coming back to the idea of making my house feel more like home, of making a small useful workspace for myself, of finding times to be with supportive and loving friends, etc. I can decide later how I want this to work for me; for now I can just focus making Sanctuary a priority in my life.
How funny, I just posted yesterday about a word I've been sort of meditating on lately and how it ties in with my new year's resolutions.

Great word to choose.
I had also decided to explore spirituality more over the next year. It came up during the writing course I did in November. Mostly in curiosity over the conflicts I still feel about God, wanting to explore that further.
Now I'll have to keep on checking your blog, seeing how your year is going.

Oddly enough, if I had to pick a word this year it would be God as well. Though, in the sense of how I define that word: community.
