Parenting takes common sense and common sense dictates that sometimes you have to yell in order to quickly and effectively get your point across. I stopped reading parenting magazines some years ago because of articles like that one. I swear, they write about "the new parenting" one month and two months later, when you've finally learned that one, they print an altogether new "new parenting."

Just keep doing what you are doing. We grow as parents as our kids grow as people. We can't possibly have all the techniques and answers--no matter how well-read we are--until we are faced with the situations that require them.

Declaring yelling to be the new spanking -- sigh. it's the sort of pronouncement that journalists need to come up with to stir the pot and keep us feeling guilty. Sounds like you had to do something abrupt in that moment to keep one or more kids from getting hurt; also to get Janie's attention. After all, being the voice of reason was not working in that moment and hey NYT?? sometimes it doesn't with little kids and you need to reset the registers.

so, it's not chronic and it's not abusive, if it's how you typically treat your kids. sounds more like exactly what the situation called for.

and I'm glad everybody is ok.

I like to think of myself as a reformed yeller, although there are definitely situations where it's justifiable, as your story illustrated.

I yell. I'd prefer not to but when I've said something ten times in a normal voice to absolutely no effect whatsoever there doesn't seem to be any other practical alternative ;-)

Yesterday, when I'd asked my boys repeatedly to go and do their homework and eventually bellowed at them to "DO IT NOW!" Tom made some kind of protest at being yelled at and David said to "No, it's fair enough, she had asked us lots of times." *sigh* Maybe I should save time and just go straight to the bellow next time!
