"Whoa!  How did he do that?!" my kids exclaimed as the magician we were watching lifted a cup to reveal that a small red rubber ball had been magically transformed into a bright yellow tennis ball.
My son Austen thought a moment and then exclaimed, "I know how [...]

Warning Signs

I went for a checkup recently, and as I waited for the doctor, I read some of the brochures in the office about heart disease, diabetes, cancer... And found that in nearly every brochure, one of the symptoms listed for cancer was "no symptoms or vague [...]

Earlier this year, I read an article about technology that would allow us to record and store every moment of our lives. Imagine: our whole lives stored in a single searchable archive. We could settle those arguments with the boss by replaying what was [...]

"I can't hear this song without thinking of you," I said to Mark as The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" came on my music mix a few days ago.  It reminded me of falling in love with him in college: how he made me scream, and laugh, [...]

Haikus for Christmas Long Ago and Far Away

A box marked "fragile"
holds shining memories wrapped
in crumpled paper.
She lights up like a
firefly whenever you're
around, George Bailey.
Once a year. Each year.
They emerge, sparkling,
to be packed away.
The delicate glass,
like breath on a windowpane,
glitters and is gone.
This year, glass soldiers
wait, tissue-wrapped with angels,
in muffled darkness.
I hear your silence
echoing through the carols
louder than church bells.
If the glass shatters,
but [...]

Lost Time Haiku

I wound my first watch;
Mickey Mouse hands driven by
the soft click of gears.
Approximations,
a few minutes here or there,
time was blurry, soft.
Now countless pixels
guide me with sharp precision,
but I miss Mickey.

I started keeping a journal semi-regularly when I was in middle school.  My very earliest journal entries are a thrilling roller coaster ride through the life of a suburban tween: from the heartbreaking lows of the cancellation of my favorite TV show to the giddy highs of [...]

Footloose Haiku

A school carnival:
swept in a wild, laughing throng
we push through gym doors.
Heads bent like flowers,
a giggling daisy chain,
girls walk with arms linked.
"Hey, it's your birthday!
I'll request a song for you!
Do you like Footloose?"
Like popcorn we bounce,
squealing as one breaks away,
rushing the DJ.
Twenty five years pass.
My daughter's hand rests in mine
like a rose petal.
Heads cocked birdlike [...]

The First Night I Kissed Him Haiku

The wild wind exhales,
Dead leaves whirl in a dance, then
lie still, quivering.

So, you know, I'm not really codependent.  (I hate that word anyway.  Sincerely I do.)  I just like to do nice things for people.  Really nice things.  Like that time in college [...]
